David Kukutai Jones
Ko Tainui te waka
Ko Taupiri te maunga Ko Waikato te awa Ko Waikato te iwi Ko David Kukutai Jones ahau David has worked across several different sectors in the last 30 years but all within the area of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge and research). His recent experience participating in Māori-centred research around pain, as well as his traditional Māori medicine background will be the focus of his presentation, and his contribution to one of the conference's convened panels. |
David worked in information science as an archivist, librarian, and teaching fellow in institutions such as the Alexander Turnbull Library in the National Library of New Zealand, at Victoria University of Wellington, and at Te Wānanga o Raukawa (Ōtaki).
His knowledge in mātauranga Māori set him in good stead in the development of a career centering on traditional Māori environmental research and enabling him to teach in Earth Sciences at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi (Whakatāne) in Kaioranga (Horticulture and Māori food sovereignty).
Since the environment and traditional Māori health are so inexplicably linked, it was a natural progression for David to move into the health sciences and begin teaching rongoā (Māori medicine) at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
As well as his formal qualifications, David has spent the last 10 years under the tutelage of many different traditional Māori healers and practitioners, and built his own private practice and become a highly regarded coach and mentor in the traditional health and wellbeing sector.
David currently lectures in the School of Nursing at Auckland University of Technology leading the department and its collaborative partners and stakeholders in the development and delivery of curriculum, research, and support for Māori. He is a member of AUT’s Centre for Active Ageing, a supporter of Te Kaunihera o Ngā Neehi Māori (New Zealand Māori Nurses Council) and Te Whārangi Ruamano (Nursing Education in the Tertiary Sector).
